"Big six" banks
Currently, the biggest bank in Canada is Royal Bank. It is the largest based on both assets and market capitalization, followed by (in order) TD Canada Trust, Scotiabank, Bank of Montreal, CIBC and National Bank.
Major credit unions
- Desjardins Group (Mouvement des caisses populaires Desjardins): is Canada’s largest credit union with CAD $144 billion in 2007. The Desjardins Group has more assets than the National Bank of Canada (a member of the Big Six), and is the largest private employer in Quebec.
- VanCity: VanCity is Canada’s second largest credit union with CAD $14.1 billion in assets in 2007. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
- Coast Capital Savings: Coast Capital Savings is Canada’s third largest credit union with CAD $8.9 billion in assets and $1.7 billion in mutual funds in 2006. Based in Surrey, British Columbia.
- Envision Financial: Envision Financial is a large credit union in Canada with CAD $3.8 billion in assets and over 100,000 members in 2007. Based in Langley, British Columbia.
- North Shore Credit Union: North Shore Credit Union (NSCU) is a large credit union in Canada with CAD $2.0 billion in assets and over 40,000 members. Based in North Vancouver, British Columbia.
- Alterna Savings: Alterna Savings is a large credit union in Canada with CAD $1.7 billion in assets in 2006. Based in Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario.
